What is a cookie?

A cookie is a tracker, a computer file placed on your hard drive by the server of a website you visit, or when you read an e-mail or install or use a piece of software or a mobile application. The term “cookie” can, for example, cover http cookies, “flash” cookies, invisible pixels or “web bugs”, or any other identifier generated by a software program or operating system.

Cookies on our website and what they are used for

Various types of cookie are used on the site, for different purposes:

Functional / functionality cookies

Functional cookies are not essential for browsing our website but they do optimise its operation and give you access to specific functionalities. They allow us:

  • to personalise your experience on our site (for example, to remind you of the pages you viewed most recently);
  • to adapt how our site is presented based on your terminal’s display preferences (language used, display resolution, operating system used, etc.) when you visit it.

Analytical / audience measurement cookies

These cookies help us to understand how our site is used and performs, generate statistics and ascertain the number of visitors and how the various elements are used (sections and content viewed, and the visitor’s pathway through the site), which allows us to make our services more useful and improve their user-friendliness (for example, which pages are viewed most often, or what users search for in our search engine).
